Longitudinal Assessment of Nutritional Intervention in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Health Outcomes

Land Ho

  • Phase: N/A

What is the goal of the study?

Aim 1:To determine long-term clinical efficacy of the specific carbohydrate diet. Track standard clinical and laboratory outcomes for IBD over a 4-year period for patients on dietary and non-dietary treatments. Tract anthropometrics and nutritional laboratory outcomes over a 4-year period for patients on dietary and non-dietary treatments. Aim 2: Determine the phylogenetic and functional response of the gut microbiome to the SCD. This study will examine the effectiveness of SCD vs non SCD changes in microbial community structure by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metagenomics, and expressed functions will be determined through a combination of metatranscriptomics and metaproteomics. Activities and organisms correlating with diet change or change in disease state (as determined by the clinical study) will be identified. Aim 3:Characterize the mechanism(s) of action of the SCD through metabolic profiling of the gut metabolome. Metabolomics of serum, urine and stool samples will be used to identify major metabolites under the different dietary regimes. Metabolites corresponding to particular disease states across patients will be correlated to the microbiome data in Aim 2 to determine the populations of bacteria involved in their production.
