  • Biography

    Sanjay R. Parikh, MD, FACS, is Chief of the Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Seattle Children's Hospital.  He is also Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Washington.  He is President-Elect of the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology and serves on the Board of Regents of the American College of Surgeons.

    Dr. Parikh trained in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the University of Toronto including general surgery training at Harbor-UCLA County Hospital.  He then took on additional fellowship training in pedaitric otolaryngology at Boston Children's Hospital - Harvard Medical School.

    Dr. Parikh has had held leadership roles in the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS), American College of Surgeons, American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology and Northwest Academy of Otolaryngology (NWAO). He is a past Chair of the Board of Governors of the AAO-HNS and a past President of the NWAO. He also serves on the standing scientific committee of the European Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology.  Dr. Parikh has given over 200 domestic and international invited lectures with an emphasis on improving pediatric otolaryngologic surgical care.

    Clinical Interests

    Dr. Parikh's clinical interests are in surgery for complex airway, sleep, and sino-nasal disorders. He also participates in the multi-disciplinary surgical care of patients with head, neck, thyroid, and anterior skull base cancers and tumors.  He is a co-founder of Seattle Children's Complex Airway Conference, Thyroid Conference, and Refractory Obstructive Sleep Apnea (ROSA) Team.  Dr. Parikh regularly collaborates with specialists in Cardiac Surgery, Critical Care, Gastroenterology, Plastic Surgery, Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine, and General/Thoracic Surgery to develop innovative solutions for childrens with unique airway and esophageal conditions.

    Research Description

    Dr. Parikh is committed to advancing knowledge and research in pediatric otolaryngology.  He has published over 170 peer reviewed articles, book chapters, and reviews.  He has mentored over 75 residents, fellows, and other faculty to develop innovative research aims in the field of pediatric otolaryngology.  He has had multiple research grants from the Seattle Children's Research Institute, University of Washington School of Medicine, and the National Institute for Health (NIH).  His current NIH-R01 funded research is a joint collaboration with Dr. Emily Boss from Johns Hopkins Medical School with a central aim of improving communication and decision-making between surgeons and patients to reduce risk and improve outcomes.
