"As a resident here at UW/ Seattle Children's, I was fortunate that my training was rooted in a culture of excellence. As a fellow in Craniofacial medicine, I quickly realized that caring for individuals with uncommon and sometimes complex conditions affords an important opportunity to partner with a team and develop our definitions of excellence. Surrounded by a community of passionate providers and researchers, I strive to answer questions that will ultimately translate into improved care for my patients. And I am inspired, each day, to work among a team of colleagues, patients and families aligned towards a common goal."

Biography
Kelly Evans, MD is an attending physician at Seattle Children's Hospital and an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine. She completed her clinical fellowship in Craniofacial Medicine at Seattle Children's Hospital in 2012. She has long enjoyed working with and teaching medical students and residents.
Dr. Evans cares for patients at Seattle Children’s Hospital, both in the clinic and on the inpatient acute care floor. Her clinical experience treating children with craniofacial anomalies, airway compromise and tracheostomy dependence combined with her motivation to improve outcomes in a vulnerable population and are the basis of her research focus. The complex pathophysiology and myriad of unanswered questions have drawn her to focus on infants and children with upper airway obstruction and early sleep apnea.Â
Dr. Evans's research investigates sleep and breathing in children born with craniofacial conditions, with the goal of improving outcomes in patients with conditions that affect airway function. Her research focuses on children born with micrognathia, glossoptosis and cleft palate, also known as Robin sequence (RS). She was invited to participate in an international workgroup developing consensus-based tools to identify and treat neonates with upper airway obstruction. She has has helped lead three international RS Consensus meetings, and the resulting consensus statement was published in JAMA Pediatrics. Collectively, this work has impressed upon her the importance of developing collaborative research partnerships to elevate the care for children with airway obstruction, and given the potential healthcare impact, focusing on the most vulnerable population, children with RS and early airway obstruction, is a crucial focus.Â
Dr. Evans and a dedicated interdisciplinary team of clinicians in Seattle recently introduced a new airway treatment for our patients. This therapy, the orthodontic airway plate (OAP), grounded in decades of evidence from colleagues in TĂĽbingen, Germany, is a treatment approach that will improve short term and long term outcomes for individuals with Robin sequence. Excited by the potential to improve breathing, sleep, feeding and craniofacial growth in this population, Dr. Evans and her colleagues have developed an Orthodontic Airway Program to serve our patients.Â
