Community Programs and Classes
Good health relies on more than medical care. At Seattle Children’s Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic (OBCC), we help our families with needs related to food and fitness, emotional well-being, physical safety and more. We make it easy for patients to get varied services in a single visit. OBCC provides space for parent-led support groups and education programs so families can learn from each other. We also hold events, like our Community Grand Rounds: The OBCC Town Hall Series.
To avoid the spread of COVID-19, we have changed many programs and put some on hold. Please email OBCCCarecoordination@seattlechildrens.org or call 206-987-7210 to find out the latest.

Women, Infants and Children (WIC)

The WIC program offers services to eligible women and children to help them eat well, learn about nutrition and stay healthy.
Services differ based on the needs of each participant. They may include access to food, breast/chest pumps, breastfeeding/chestfeeding support, education about nutrition and more.

- Already qualify for state health insurance or other state services (and meet at least one of the criteria listed above)

Community kitchen at OBCC Othello
Our community kitchen at OBCC Othello hosts cooking classes that encourage families to get in the kitchen and cook together. You will learn kitchen safety, recipes, how to shop and more. During Family Flavor cooking classes, caregivers can take a turn as a “guest chef” and share their favorite regional and cultural recipes.
The kitchen is also a space where families and community members can do meal prep, prepare for festivals and community celebrations and learn about each other’s food traditions and culture.

Emotional Well-Being
In addition to the programs listed below, OBCC offers behavioral health services.
-
Parent-child interactive therapy (PCIT)
Parent-child interactive therapy (PCIT) is for children ages 3 to 7 and their caregivers. PCIT works to improve parent-child relationships and to change patterns of how parents interact with their child. Disruptive behavior is the most common reason that young children are referred for behavioral health services. This can include issues such as talking back or aggression. PCIT combines behavioral therapy, play therapy and parent training to teach more effective ways to improve children’s behavior.

Safety and Injury Prevention
We want everyone to be safe — at home, on the go and at play. OBCC gives out certain safety items for free or lower cost. Talk to your OBCC provider, check Seattle Children’s Injury Prevention resources or email us at OBCCsafety@seattlechildrens.org. We can help with:
- Gun safety: Keeping guns away from children and teens saves lives. Learn about safe firearm storage and discuss options for getting a safe firearm storage device for your family.
- Home safety: We have tips on preventing falls from windows (Spanish), storing medicine safely (Spanish PDF), suicide prevention (video 4:50), avoiding burns and choking (Spanish PDF) and what to put in your first aid kit.
- Car safety: Read guidelines for choosing and using child safety seats (Spanish PDF) and why it’s so dangerous to leave a child alone in a car.
- Sports safety: Staying active is great for fun and fitness. See safety tips and gear — for biking (Spanish video), scooter or skateboard (Spanish PDF), playing basketball or winter sports (Spanish PDF). See the signs of concussion (video 0:30).
- Water safety: Make a splash safely with tips on water safety.
Social Safety Net
Kids do not thrive if they lack a safe place to live or enough to eat. Thanks to partnerships in the community, we are helping to meet a fuller range of families’ needs.
Partnerships
-
Northwest Sickle Cell Collaborative
The Northwest Sickle Cell Collaborative makes life better for children and families with sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait. It is a joint project of Odessa Brown and several other healthcare organizations.

SmileMobile
Children should be seen by a dentist as soon as they have teeth, but many children in our state go without dental care. It’s more than twice as likely for 2-year-olds in Washington state to have dental decay than it is for children elsewhere in the nation (source: Washington Dental Service [WDS] Foundation).
The SmileMobile is a 38-foot-long dental clinic on wheels that travels across Washington providing dental care to children from families with low incomes. The mobile clinic provides exams, preventive care, fillings and minor oral surgery on a sliding-fee a basis. Many children see a dentist for the first time when the SmileMobile rolls into their community — and sometimes they are 18 years old.
Seattle Children’s is a partner in the SmileMobile with Arcora, the parent company of Delta Dental of Washington, and local organizations.
-
Washington Medical-Legal Partnership
